Our Daily Bread – Empty Bowls Event

(February 2014) Our Daily Bread, Inc. (ODB) in Fairfax, VA is a local non-profit that has been providing emergency assistance to residents of Fairfax City and County for 30 years. Each February we host a community event called “Empty Bowls” to raise money and awareness of food insecurity that exists among our neighbors.

I’ve been a member of the Board of Directors since 2010. Even in a county like Fairfax known for it’s wealth, there are still families who are working at minimum wage jobs inadequate to support them when there is an emergency. Often times it’s a car problem, a medical issue, cut back in hours or a job loss that sends these families into a crisis period. Our Daily Bread provides temporary emergency assistance both financial and with food. We also offer Financial Literacy classes and mentoring for our clients to help them bridge that crisis period and end up in a more stable place.
